Graphic Shows The Size Of Rosetta's Comet

Our sense of scale tends to adjust to circumstances. So when we think about comets it is easy to compare them with other astronomical objects. In which case, comet 67P/Churyumov - Gerasimenko - just three kilometers wide - soundstiny.

However, as you can see in the image above, things lokk rather different when you compare the comet to something we are really familiar with - such as tall buildings.

While Churyumov - Gerasimenko is small enough that one could walk from one end to the other in less than an hour, it's easy to forget the three dimensional nature of something like this - three kilometers across is no big deal, but two kilometers helps make sense of what happened to the dinosaurs.

The image is by Matt Wang, who combined a photograph of Los Angeles with an image fromthe Rosetta spacecraft rendezvousing with Churyumov - Gerasimenko, prior to going into orbit and eventually landing.

While Rosetta will e doing its best to touch down gentlyon the comet's surface, we can't count on Churyumov - Gerasimenko doing the some if it ever paid LA a visit. You can get some idea of what would happen in such a collision here, although the scale of the damage depends greatly on the impact speed you choose to enter.

Since Churyumov - Gerasimenko never crosses the Earth's orbit is no danger of a collision, at last until a close encounter with some other planet shifts its orbit. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for other, even larger, asteroids and comets.

Scientists Creates Diamonds From Peanut Butter

Diamonds are typically created more than 800 meters  (500 miles) below Earth's surface when temperatures over 2200 degrees Celsius (4000 degrees Fahrenheit) and pressure 1.3 million times greater than the atmosphere combine and crystallize carbon into the clear white stone we all know. Synthetic diamonds can replicate the process in a few short days, creating diamonds that are less politically-charged for use in jewelry, electronics, manufacturing, and more.

Dan Frost of Germany's Bayerisches Geoinsitut has been creating diamonds out of a rather unlikely source of carbon: peanut butter. Frost explained his process to BBC Future's David Robinson.

While it might sound a bit on the ridiculous side, Fros't process is allowing him to explore the composition of Earth's mantle, and even challenge some long-standing assumptions about where some of these elemental components originated. Meteorites and asteroids are assumed to have brought a large amount of material to early Earth, but the amount of silicon found in those bodies is much higher than what can be found in the planet's crust. To test if the silicon migrated down into the mantle, Frost needs to replicate the environmental conditions of the region.

Heat and pressure similar to conditions within the mantle begin to rearrange the carbon atoms into a dense configuration. Adding more pressure spurs the formation of a diamond, which Frost then bombards with acoustics. The pathway of the sound waves through the gem is then compared to those recorded from seismic waves, allowing Frost to make deductions about the lower mantel's composition.

Frost found that the lower mantle doesn't appear to be rich in silicon, which raises more questions about where all of that silicon has gone. Did it migrate all the way to the core? Did it stay on the crust and get kicked out by meteorite impacts?
Could scientists be wrong about the amount of silicon was expected to have come to the Earth?

It is unlikely that peanut butter diamonds will be featured in jewelry anytime soon. This method takes weeks to produce a diamond that is 3 millimeters in diameter, which is smaller than a round cut 0.25 carat stone. Additionally, the hydrogen bonded to the carbon atoms are released after the diamond forms, which can cause small explosions.

"It sounds horrific," he tells BBC Future. "But it's not dangerous - everything is protected."

Instead, Frost will focus on the geological and industrial implications of creating diamonds. Though this particular experiment uses peanut butter as the carbon source, minor changes in the recipe could yield stones that have specialized properties. Lacing diamonds with boron could minimize the amount of heat generated when diamonds are used in semiconductors, which is currently a substantial amount. Using carbon nanotubes could add a level of structural support, creating a material stronger than anything on the planet.

Apparently, Burning NH4Cr2O7 With HgSCN Opens A Portal To Hell.

Of all the chemical reactions we've covered within the past few months, the one filmed below probaby takes the prize for coolest looking and possibly scariest. After the pile of reactants is lit, it begins to look like tentacles are crawling out of a portal to Hell.

In reality, what's depicted in the video below is actually two reactions: the decomposition of ammonium dichromate and the combustion reaction of mercury (II)  thiocyanate.

The orange powder is ammonium dichromate and when heat is introduced, it forms nitrogen gas, water, and ammonium (III) oxide, which is the dark powder that looks like the volcano you see.

What appears to be tentacles is actually what happens when heat is introduced to mercury (II) thiocyanate. The white solid expands when it's heated to become a dark, tentacle - like mass due to its decomposition to carbon nitride. In addition, sulfur dioxide and mercury (II) sulfide are also produced. The reaction is appropriately nicknamed the "Pharoah's Serpent" and was sold in stores as fireworks until people realized it's toxic.

Watching A Can Of Coca Cola Get Destroyed By Lava Is Totally Amazing!

This is definitely something you don't come across every day.Lavapix uploaded a video on You Tube  to show us how a can of coca cola gets consumed by a volcano. Shot with Nikon D800 and GoPro camera , the video is so mesmerizing that it's hard to look away from the oozy, slow, melt down.

The first can, as explained by the about section, has a tiny hole punched on the top to prevent a random explosion. It gets heated up and squirts the coke. The second can though sealed, falls over immediately it gets in contact with the lava. It gets punctured due to the heat and leaks.
                                                     
              
                                                 
                                              

The video was a scientific test on how different objects react to lava hitting them at 2000 degrees. They took safety precautions when shooting the video and only the GoPro was in harm's way.

'By the end this outing most of my camera gear was just a bit sticky'
Bryan, the video creator said.

Six bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, dining room and a pantry: Welcome to the home for astronauts on MARS

  • It's hoped the project will provide data and information that will prove useful for a future manned mission to Mars
Welcome to your new home on Mars
Above your head, solar panels are powering the dome - shaped habitat you're standing in. The high ceilings should make you feel comfortable, and there's a 3D-printer to make new tools.
It might seem far-fetched, but that's a scenario that might not be too far in the future when the first mission to Mars goes ahead - and Nasa has been testing such a habitat recently in Hawaii.

The Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or Hi-Seas, is a Nasa sponsored project to see how a crew would cope with living on Mars.

WHAT IS THE HI-SEAS MISSION?

The Hi-Seas (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simultation) mission's crews spend months 8,000 feet (2,440 meters) above sea level in a geodesic-dome habitat on the northen slope of the Mauna Loa volcano.
The volcano is a barren landscape, an abandoned quarry with little vegetation   that's as similar to Mars landscape as planet Earth can get.

The crew members live under Mars-like conditions. According to Hi-Seas 'communication latencies and blackouts,in close quarters, under strict water-use rules,etc' are part of the deal.

The food study was designed to test food preparation strategies for long-termspace exploration 
Hi-Seas aims to address problems that many be encountered in future space missions by simulating exploration in areas of the world similar to space environments.
The aim mission, funded by Nasa's Human Research Program, the University of Hawaii and Cornell University, is to learn about living sustainably on Mars.
The third and latest mission started on 17 October 2014,  and will concludeon July 2015.

There are six pie-slice-shaped bedrooms for the crewmembers to live in, all adjacent to one other (shown in diagram). This floor is above the ground level and also has a bathroom and an open balcony to below, making the habitat seem big so the crew doesn't feel trapped

Each room has a bed, mattress and a stool. There is space under each bed for clothes to be stored. A 3D printer is also in the habitat to enable the crew to print new tools if they need to. On a future mission to Mars,items like a 3D printer will likely be iinvaluable as resupply missions will be scarce or non - existent.

Partial Solar Eclipse 2014 Arrives Tursday. Here's How To Watch It Safely

It's already been a big week for skywatchers, and more celestial fun is on the horizon.

On Tuesday, skywatchers were treated to the annual Orionid meteor shower. And now a spooky partial solar eclipse will darken skies for viewers across North North America on Thursday,Oct.23.

A partial solar eclipse occur when the new moon passes in front of the sun, casting a shadow on Earth and blocking a portion of the sun from view.

The eclipse will be visible in the late afternoon between the East and West Coast of the U.S., as far North as the Arctic, and as far south as Mexico.

If you'd like to watch the eclipse, be very careful. Eclipse or no eclipse, scientists caution that starting at the sun with naked eye can cause permanent eye damage.

Safe ways to view the event include wearning special eclipse glasses or making a pinhole projector to project the view onto another surface. If you'll be using a telescope, you'll need a special filter.

The Coca-Cola Space Science Center at Columbs State University in Georgia, and the Slohh Community Observatory, with its main feed coming from the Prescott Solar Observatory in Arizona, will live-stream the eclipse starting at 5 p.m.EDT.

Want to give someone a unique present? How about a bolt  of lightning? These scluptures were made by blasting a block of acrylic with 5 million volt particle acceleator. The effect on the material is as if a lightning flash has been frozen in time, a process that scluptor Bert Hickman calls 'Captured Lightning'.

It is a unique solution to boost a child with a prosthetic limb's confidence.
A 3D printing enthusiast has build an 'Iron Man' hand he hopes to develop in a prosthetic for children.
The low cost arm can be cheaply printed on any 3D printer, and its inventor has offered to help children to want one print their own.

The Iron Man hand is designed to be worn by a child, and will allow them to grip objects - and use it's features such as a laser and a 'Thruster'

'How can we help a child that faces everyday challenges with a disability?' My answer is to give them the most awesome prosthetic hand, and raise their self esteem to Super Hero Levels,' wrote Pat Starace, the creator of the project.

' The vision was to create a hand, so that a child can have something that solves a mechanical challenge, is affordable, and mostly Looks Awesome!'

Starace took to the web to ask for children interested in the hand, offering to work with them to create a custom version.
'If you're a kid or a parent of a child that needs this, please contact me,' he said.


The hand is modelled on the Iron Man suit worn by inventor Tony Stark in the hit film 

'Requestshave been streaming in, and i will replay to everyone.'
The hand uses a combination of mechanics and string to close the fingers.
An Arduino mini computer is used to control it, and it also boasts, at least according to Starace's design drawing, a 'Working laser and thruster'

The entire project took a month to complete, Starace said.




Just like the real thing, the prosthetic hand has a 'thruster' although in this case it's a high powered LED light.

If there's one gadget that is crying out for a redesign it's the humble umbrella, whether they're being torn apart in the wind or clashing into people.

That's where the Air Umbrella comes in .The ambitious design creates a 'force field' of air above a user to deflect rain.

The potentially revolutionary device comes in three sizes but won't be available until late next year.

The gadget was created by inventor Chuan Wang from Nanjing, China and it is currently part of a Kickstarter camping.

On their page the team notes that the product is still in  a research and development phase-although that hasn;t stopped them already reaching their target $10.000.

The long and thin device resembling a regular umbrella but without the fabric. It works using a lithium battery to power the fans inside.

At its base is a button that turns it on and off, while the bottom can also twist to change the size of the air emitted.

Above this is the somewhat large lithium battery, with a motor mounted on top.

This drives a set of fans in the head of the sceptre-like device. Air is drawn in at the bottom of the head, and then expelled at the top.

This creaters a canopy of air above a person that will blow water away and apparently keep you dry in the rain.

Whether you're waiting in line for the new iPhone or camping in the woods, sometimes you just need a makeshift bed.

So to help you get 40 winks without having to make do with the cold hard ground, one company has designed a wearable futon you can carry with you.
The coat-like bed is full of padding so you can rest easily on the floor, and it can also be rolled up like a sleeping bag.

The somewhat bizarre Wearable Futon Air Mat Set was created by Tokyo-based Japanese office supply manufacturer King Jim.
It can be fastened at the neck and the bottoms of the legs fold up to adjust for different heights.


                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    
This can also change the fit of the 'coat' depending on the season. 
The pack includes an air mat to provide a full blanket and futon set so you don't necessarily have to sleep on the ground with the wearable futon by itself
While the main coat-futon can roll up into a sack like a sleeping bag, the air mat can be folded into a small A4-sized bag.
The sleeves and legs can also be folded up so that you don't trip over yourself while you are walking around with it in 'coat mode'.
The product itself is made of nylone, polyethylene and polyester.
In total the coat weighs about 1.5lbs (700g), which should make it relatively easy for most to wear and carry.
In size it measures 5.25ft (1.6 meters) long and two feet (0.6 meters) wide, while the air mat is 9.45 ft ( long and 2.3 ft(o.7 meters) wide. That should be comfortable enough for most people, but if someone wants to share your 'bed' they'll probably need a Wearable Futon Air Mat Set of their own.
The mat can take a load of up to 440lbs (200kg) without breaking.
The product is available now for about $40 from supplier King Jim, although there's no news of a release in other territories yet.

7 Laboratories Located In Some Of The World's Most Extreme Environments

Researchers will go to extremes in order to get results. They will get out of their comfort zones, or out of our plant in the name of science. The laboratories discussed below are some where scientists have to work in the most difficult conditions , on the plant and sometimes off it, on mountaintops, at the poles or under water. Their work helps us better understand our universe and get valuable information on the weather, the human body, climate change and many other things.

                                  

1. IceCube Neutrino Observatory, Antarctica

It's the coldest physics laboratory in the world. Equipment used to detect very high energy neutrions (these are subatomic particles that are known to originate from some violent astronomical phenomena e.g, exploding stars)are not telescopes in space. In fact, they an array of sensors located deep below the surface of the earth. In the frozen wastes of the Antarctica, you will find the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located under a thick ice layer. The neutrions sometimes react with molecules in the water to produce Chernekov radiation that is picked up by PTMs (the photomultiplier tubes).

Creation of IceCube involved the positioning of Digital Optical Modules (DOMs), which are sphererical sensors that contain PMTs, at depth of between 1450 and 2,450 meters (4747 and 8038 feet). The Digital Optical Modules range over 1 cubic kilometer (0.23 cubic meters) of ice which makes them part of the coldest physical laboratory and the largest neutrino observatory in the world. Raw data they collect at the observatory is approximately one terabyte daily which is around 100 gigabyte

2. Long Island's Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA

It's the hottest temperature producing laboratory in the world. The Relativistic Heavy lon Collider (RHIC) found at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, announced in February 2012, the production of temperature of around 4 trillon degrees Celcius (7.2 trillon degrees Fahrenheit). This is the  hottest temperature man has ever created! It's 250,000 times greater than the heat found at the earth's center. This was achieved by the collision of gold ions at close to the speed of light, and quark-gluon plasma-which is a soup of elementary particles that existed in nature a fraction of a second after Big Bang - was created.

It's the second most powerful hevy ion collider when compared to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The RHIC facility is also the only one where polarized protons are collided so as to study how protons obtain their spin.It;s the world record holder for the highest energy polarized protons to ever be seen and in addition, it produces record - breaking temperatures.

3. Sagarmatha National Park's Pyramid Laboratory in Nepal

It's the highest terrestrial laboratory in the world. In the Himalayas, at the Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal, there stands a pyramid shaped laboratory that is three storeys high. The laboratory and observatory is made out of steel, glass and aluminium. It;s located at the base of Mount Everest at 16,568 feet or 5,050 meters above sea level. The research done here is on subjects like human physiology, geology, the environment and climate.

The laboratory was created by the Ev-K2-CNR Committee, wich is dedicated to the promotion of technical and scientific altitude research. It has three levels: laboratories and warehouses are on the first two levels while the third level is devoted to telecommunications and data processing. 
The pyramid is a landmark to scientists and also to locals who use its telecom facilities sometimes.(source:1,2,3,4,)

4. The NOAA Aquarius Reef Base, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in Florida, USA.

It;s the deepest underwater laboratory in the world and one of its kind. This is because other undersea laboratories like the Conshelf lll and Conshelf l cabin that were operational during the 1960s, wnet beneath the waves. The Aquarius lab is around 50 to 60 ft (which is about 15 to 18 meters) below the surface of the water in a marine 
sanctuary at Florida Keys. It has been used to study the ecology of the reef by researchers for the last two decades. Facilities in the laboratory include six bunks that have a bathroom plus windows that are onto the watery world outside.

The intention of building CERN was to support collaboration between scientists from different nations.
This it has succeeded in doing since currently, the facility is used by over 10,000 engineers and scientists from across 113 different countries. There are nearly 1,500 employees working part-time and 2,400 that work full time. Since its founding in 1954, discoveries that are important and Nobel-winning have been made at the facility including technological developments that include the World Wide Web. (source:1,2,3)

6.SNOLAB, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

It's deepest underground laboratory in the world. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNOLAB) found in Ontario, is used for observing deep space phenomenon found far below the earth's surface, just like the IceCube. The facility can be found inside a nickel mine which is 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) deep. The laboratory covers 5,000 square meters (16,404 square feet) of space. Above ground, it boasts a support building that covers 3,100 square meters which is around 10,170 square foot.\

SNOLAB research is mainly focused on astroparticle physics which includes; cosmic dark matter, supernova nutritional searches and low-energy solar nutritions. Scientists from other fields like seismology and  geophysics have also expressed interests in working at this facility and this could help underground biology researchers. (source:1,)

7. International Space Station, outer Space

It's the highest altitude laboratory in the world. The international Space Station (ISS) is the most extreme laboratory in terms of speed, inhospitable environments and altitude. Orbiting the earth at altitudes that range  from 205 to 270 miles (which is around 330 to 535 kilometers) and averaging a speed of 27,724 km/hr (17,227 mph), the incredible space station is 108,5 meters (356 feet) wide and 72,8 meters (239 feet) long.

A variety of experiments are carried out in this facility including human biology, physicis, meteorology and astronomy. The almost weightless environment of the facility (which is as a result of its constant freefall state and not outer space's zero gravity) , makes it a unique research setting.

It has been a sci-fi dream for decades - car that can simply take to the air avoid traffic.
However, a Slovakian firm has said it has finally cracked the problem.
The AeroMobil can fly 430 miles on a tank of petrol - and when its wings flod down, i'll fit into a nornal parking space.

When in flight mode, it can go 430 miles. reaching 124mph

Aeromobil is a 'flying car' that perfectly makes use of existing infrasctructure created for automobiles and planes, and opens doors to real door-to-door travel, ' the firm says.

When in its car configuration, it can fit into a standard parking space, and it also takes normal fuel pumped at every service station.
The latest version is the third generation of the craft.
Tatiana Veber, an AeroMobil spokesman said: 'We have been developing the concept or flying car since 1990.
Our first model looked quite bizarre and it would have problems in the regular use.
That was a signal to improve the concept of the flying car in a way to become an intergral part of the regular road traffic.

AeroMobil says its third prototype is ready to be shown to the world this October 29th at the Pioneers Festival in Austria.
However, design is still not perfect - the wings fold into the back seat behind the driver when in car mode.
The firm has also released a video of it in action, driving through city streets then taking to the air.
'AeroMobil 3 is stylish, comfortable for both the driver and passenger, and exceptionally combines the performance of a sport car with qualities of an 'ultralight', it says.
